The Ugly Duckling 미운 오리 새끼

 

Finally, he found an old hut in the forest. He entered the hut. There were a woman, a cat, and a hen. The woman was very old. "What are you? A duck?" she asked. "How wonderful! You can stay here and lay eggs for me."

 

마침내 미운 오리 새끼는 숲속에서 낡은 오두막 한 채를 발견했다. 미운 오리 새끼는 그 오두막으로 들어갔다. 여자와 고양이와 암탉이 있었다. 여자는 나이가 매우 지긋한 할머니였다. "너는 뭐냐? 오리냐?" 할머니가 물었다. "잘됐구나! 여기에 머물면서 내게 알을 낳아 주면 되겠다." 

 

The next day, the cat asked the ugly duckling, "Where are your eggs?"

"I don't have any aggs, "he answered.

"Then you are useless. You must leave, " the hen said. The ugly duckling left the hut. The weather was getting colder.

 

다음 날 고양기가 미운 오리 새끼에게 물었다. "네 알들은 어디에 있니?"

"나는 알이 없어요" 미운 오리 새끼가 대답했다. "그럼 넌 쓸모가 없구나, 떠나 줘야겠다" 암탉이 말했다. 미운 오리새끼는 오두막을 떠났다. 날씨가 점점 더 추워지고 있었다. 

 

 

 

One day at sunrise, he saw something beautiful and strange overhead. It was a flight of beautiful birds three swans! They had long necks and soft white wings. They were migrating south. 

 

 

어느 날 해가 뜰 무렵, 미운 오리 새끼는 무언가 아름답고 낯선 것이 머리 위로 지나가는 걸 보았다. 그것은 아름다운 새 떼였다. 바로 세 마리의 백조였다! 백조들은 기다란 목과 부드럽고 하얀 날개를 가지고 있었다. 그들은 남쪽으로 이동하는 중이었다.

 

"Oh, what beautiful birds!" he thought. He called to them. "Who are you? Take me with you." But they did not hear him.

 

"아, 정말 아름다운 새들이다!" 미운 오리 새끼는 생각했다. 녀석은 백조들에게 소리쳤다 "당신들은 누구죠? 나를 데려가 줘요" 그러나 백조들한테 녀석의 소리가 들리지 않았다. 

 

 

Winter came, and the water in the lake froze. The poor ugly duckling could not even swim in the water. He was cold and  had no food to eat. 

 

겨울이 와서 호수의 물이 얼었다. 가엾은 미운 오리 새끼는 물에서 헤엄도 칠 수 없게 되었다. 미운 오리 새끼는 추웠고 먹을 만한 먹이도 없었다. 

 

A farmer walked by the lake. He saw the ugly duckling lying on the ice. "You poor bird, " he said. "I will take you home and help you." He pickd up the ugly duckling and took him home.

 

한 농부가 호숫가를 지나갔다. 그는 미운 오리 새끼가 얼음 위에 쓰러져 있는 걸 보았다. "가엾은 새로구나" 그가 말했다. "내가 널 집으로 데려가서 도와주마" 농부는 미운 오리 새끼를 집어 들고 집으로 데려갔다. 

 

 

The man had a wife, a son, and a daughter. They took good care of the ugly duckling. Slowly, he started to get better. Thanks to them, the ugly duckling was able to survive the cold winter. However, by springtime, he had grown so big. The farmer decided to set the ugly duckling free by the pond.

 

그 남자에게는 아내와 아들과 딸이 있었다. 그들은 미운 오리 새끼를 잘 보살폈다. 미운 오리새 끼는 차츰 회복되기 시작했다. 그들 덕분에 미운 오리 새끼는 추운 겨울 잘 견뎌 낼 수 있었다. 그렇지만 봄이 될 무렵 미운 오리 새끼는 몸집이 아주 크게 자라 있었다. 농부는 미운 오리 새끼를 연못가에 놓아주기로 결정했다. 

 

 

The ugly duckling was alone again. He was swimming alone in the pond. Then, suddenly, he started to flap his wings and flew into the sky. "I can fly. I can fly!" shouted the ugly duckling. "This is amazing."

 

미운 오리 새끼는 다시 혼자가 되었다. 녀석은 연못에서 혼자 헤엄치고 있었다. 그러다 갑자기 날개를 퍼덕이기 시작하더니 하늘로 날아올랐다."내가 날 수 있어. 날 수 있다고!" 미운 오리 새끼는 소리 쳤다.

 

The ugly duckling flew all around the land. Then, he looked down and saw a garden. It was a garden with a pond. "That's a beautiful garden, " he thought. "I will go there."

 

 "정말 놀라운 일이야" 미운 오리 새끼는 땅을 빙 돌며 날았다. 그리고는 아래를 내려다보니 정원이 하나 보였다. 연못이 있는 정원이었다. "아름다운 정원이구나. 저곳에 가 봐야지." 녀석은 생각했다.

 

He landed in the pond in the garden. He looked over and saw three swans. They were the three swans he had seen in winter. "Oh, they are so beautiful, " he thought. "I have to speak to them." But the ugly duckling did not know what to say.

 

미운 오리 새끼는 정원에 있는 연못에 내려앉았다. 살펴보니 백조 세 마리가 보였다. 녀석이 겨울에 보았던 그 세마리 백조들이었다. "아, 저들은 참으로 아름답구나. 저들에게 말을 걸어 봐야겠다"하고 미운 오리 새끼는 생각했다. 그러나 미운 오리 새끼는 무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰랐다. 

 

He suddenly felt shy. He looked down into the water. Then, he saw his reflection in the water. He looked just like the swans. He was not an ugly duckling. He was a swan. "I'm a swan!" he cried.

 

미운 오리 새끼는 갑자기 수줍어졌다. 녀석은 물속에 내려다보았다. 그때 물에 비친 자기 모습이 보였다. 미운 오리 새끼는 꼭 그 백조들처럼 보였다. 미운 오리 새끼가 아니었다. 녀석은 백조였던 것이다. "내가 백조로구나!"하고 녀석은 외쳤다. 

 

 

"Mother, look, " some children shouted. "There's a new swan. Isn't he beautiful? He's the most beautiful of all the swans." The children threw some bread into the pond for him to eat. He was so pleased.

 

"엄마 보세요" 어린아이들 몇 명이 소리쳤다."새로운 백조가 있어요. 아름답지 않아요? 저 모든 백조들 중에서도 가장 아름다워요" 아이들은 연못에 빵을 던져서 녀석이 먹을 수 있도록 했다. 녀석은 무척 기뻤다.

 

All his life, people had thought he was ugly. Now, they told him how beautiful he was. It was the happiest moment of his life. 

 

 태어나서부터 줄곧 사람들은 녀석이 못생겼다고 생각해 왔다. 하지만 이제는 녀석이 참으로 아름답다고 말하는 것이 아닌가. 녀석의 삶에서 가장 행복한 순간이었다.
