양치기 소년과 늑대(The Boy Who Cried Wolf) 영어원서 읽기

The Boy Who Cried Wolf 양치기 소년과 늑대

There once was a shepherd boy. He watched a flock of sheep at the bottom of a mountain. The shepherd boy was bored watching the sheep all day by himself. So he sometimes talked to his dog or played his pipe.

 

옛날에 양치기 소년이 살았다. 소년은 산기슭에서 양 떼를 지켰다. 양치기 소년은 온종일 혼자서 양들을 지키자니 따분했다. 그래서 간간이 자신의 개에게 말을 걸거나 피리를 불었다. 

 

 

One day, he became very bored. So he thought of a plan to have some fun. He decided to play a trick on the villagers. He ran down toward the village and cried out, "Wolf! Wolf!"

 

어느 날 양치기 소년은 몹시 지루해졌다. 그래서 재미를 좀 보려고 계획을 하나 생각했다. 마을 사람들을 속여 먹기로 결심한 것이다. 소년은 마을로 달려 내려가사 소리쳤다. "늑대다! 늑대가 나타났다!"

 

 

The villagers heard the sheperd boy. The kind villagers ran up the mountain to help him. But when they arrived, they found no wolf. "Where is the wolf?"

 

마음 사람들이 양치기 소년의 소리를 들었다. 마음씨 좋은 마을 사람들은 소년을 도우려고 산 위로 달려 올라갔다. 그라나 그들이 도착해 보니 늑대는 하나도 보이지 않았다. "늑대가 어디에 있느냐?" 

 

 The boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces. "Ham ha, ha! I fooled all of you," he said. "Don't cry 'wolf,' shepherd boy, " said the villagers, "when there's no wolf!" They went back down the mountain.

 

소년은 그들의 화난 얼굴을 보고 웃었다. "하하하! 제가 여러분 모두를 속인 거예요" 소년이 말했다. "이 양치기 녀석아, 늑대도 하나 없는데 늑대가 나타났다고 외치지 마라" 마을 사람들은 이렇게 말했다. 그리고 되돌아서 산을 내려갔다.

 

 

A few days later, the shepherd boy bored again. So the boy cried out again, "Wolf! Wolf!" When the villagers arrived, the shepherd boy was lauhing at them again.

 

며칠 뒤 양치기 소년은 다시 따분했다. 그래서 소년은 또 크게 소리쳤다. "늑대다! 늑대가 나타났다!" 마을 사람들이 도착해 보니 양치기 소년은 또 그들을 보고 웃고 있었다. 

 

One day while the boy was watching the sheep, a wolf really did come. It started attacking his sheep. the frightened boy ran toward th village and shouted even louder than before. "Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is killing my sheep!"

 

어느날 소년이 양들을 지키고 있는데, 정말로 늑대 한 마리가 나타났다. 늑대는 그의 양들을 공격하기 시작했다. 겁에 질린 소년은 마을로 달려가서 전보다 훨씬 큰 소리로 외쳤다.

"늑대예요! 늑대가 나타났어요! 늑대 한마리가 내 양들을 죽이고 있어요!"

 

 

But the villagers thought he was fooling them again. So they didn't come. "He will not trick us again, " they said. Because none of them went to help the boy, the wolf killed many of the sheep. And the flok scattered. 

 

그러나 마을 사람들은 소년이 또 자기들을 속이고 있다고 생각했다. 그래서 오지 않았다. "녀석이 또다시 우리를 속이지는 못할걸" 하고 그들은 말했다. 그들 중 아무도 소년을 도우러 가지 않았기 때문에 늑대가 양 여러 마리를 죽였다. 그리고 양 떼는 뿔뿔이 흩어져 버렸다.

 

*Moral : No one believes liars even when they tell the truth. 

*교훈 : 거짓말쟁이는 진실을 말하더라도 아무도 믿지 않는다.
